Our History
SEMECCEL was founded in 1996 to operate the Cité de l’espace, which opened to the public in 1997.
The history of SEMECCEL is rooted in the creation of the Cité de l’espace, a flagship project led by the City of Toulouse and its institutional, industrial and financial partners, with the aim of sharing space culture — so deeply tied to Toulouse’s identity — with as wide an audience as possible.
Founded in 1996 as a mixed-economy company (société d’économie mixte), SEMECCEL was tasked with operating and developing this groundbreaking cultural facility, inaugurated in 1997.
Over the years, the company built up expertise in designing visitor experiences, managing cultural sites, and continually renewing scientific content that is both rigorous and accessible. In doing so, SEMECCEL gradually broadened its scope of activity.
Thirty years after its creation, SEMECCEL has become a leading player in scientific and heritage culture, capable of supporting projects that differ widely in form and in the specificities of their territory.
A company driven, more than ever, by the ambition to share knowledge, innovate, and enhance visibility.
